Major weekend Gotthard queues

Holiday makers suffered more than 2 hours in a queue for the Gotthard Tunnel over the weekend – and the situation is not going to improve for the next few weeks.

The motoring organisation, the TCS, says at its height waiting times were 2 hours 20 minutes on Saturday afternoon.

The tailbacks were despite several other roads reopening after storm damage, such as the A13 autoroute and the Simplon pass.

The traffic service, Viasuisse, says the next few weeks are also likely to be very busy. This is due to a tunnel closure in Austria and many German Länder beginning their summer holidays.

The last week of major traffic is expected on the first weekend of August. The best days to travel are Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
