Mayday marches mostly peaceful

Mayday marches took place across the country yesterday and on the whole, the events passed off peacefully. But there were some incidents in Zurich and Basel.

Side demonstrations – many with participants wearing face coverings caused some problems. In Zurich some bank branches were attacked with paint bombs and some windows damaged. Police responded with water cannon and rubber bullets.

In Basel, police isolated a group thy say were equipped for a riot. They had face coverings, protective equipment and fireworks. Using water cannon and tear gas the group was held back for three hours.

Some called the police action ‘disproportionate.’

The main marches made their point peacefully. In Zurich the theme was ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ and Trades Unions called for higher wages and pensions – highlighting rising prices – especially health insurance premiums and rents.
