A large Mexican based wholesale bakery has to change its name if it wants to operate in Switzerland.
Bimbo QSR was banned from registering its name with the Federal Institute of Intellectual Property in 2018.
The decision has now been backed by a court.
The word Bimbo – although it means ‘toddler’ in Italian, is problematic elsewhere, especially in German. It’s considered a strong racist slur – maybe even closely equivalent to the N-word.
The French meaning of the word is closer to its meaning in English.
Judges in canton Sankt Gallen considered the meaning of the word in German and French. While they did conclude the word has different meanings in the national languages – they decided it was unacceptable.
