A motion has been tabled in parliament to take out any references to God in the constitution.
In the preamble, it says ‘In the name of Almighty God, the Swiss People and the Cantons are mindful of their responsibility towards creation’.
A Zurich National Councillor, Fabian Molina, says the text is no longer relevant and is actually contradictory as the constitution also allows freedom of faith.
The motion has been signed by members from the Socialist, Green and Green Liberal parties.
Molina accepts that his motion has little chance to be accepted this time – but he believes it could succeed later.
