New CERN collider still under consideration

Cross-border French communes near Geneva have laid down their conditions for Cern's proposed 90.7-kilometre particle collider, warning they will not sign off without guarantees

The Pôle Métropolitain du Genevois Français submitted its position on Friday, ahead of the public consultation closing on 1 October.

Rather than a yes or no, it demands protection of natural resources, controls on any population influx, and a seat at the governance table.

The final decision rests with European partners, but the tunnel would run under Ain and Haute-Savoie communes where thousands of Greater Geneva residents live and work.

Cern is currently drilling test bores to check whether the ground can hold the ring.
