New express asylum plan

The government is trialling an express asylum procedure in Zurich in an effort to cut the back log of claimants.

The new system is being pushed by the Justice Minister, Elisabeth Baume-Schneider.

The pilot project will assess people who are very unlikely to have a valid claim for asylum – or for those who don’t intend this country to be the final destination.

It’s hoped it will have a deterrent effect. But the councillor points out those refused will have an opportunity to appeal.
