Geneva, and then the rest of the country, will soon be mask self-sufficient.
At the start of the pandemic, there were not enough to go around, and at one-point masks prices soared to CHF 6 each.
That prompted the company M3 Sanitrade to build mask factories in Geneva. Two production lines are now up and running and a third is due to start soon.
The company says it’s not worried as the worst of the pandemic lifts. It expects demand to stay high and hospitals in Geneva and the rest of Switzerland are being encouraged to use the local suppliers from now on.
Before the pandemic, Switzerland was dependent on imports.
The company says by 2023 it will also be producing more generalized medical protective clothing and aims to have a system in place that will recycle used masks.
