Geneva is launching a new system to ease chronic overcrowding in hospital emergency rooms.
Starting today, residents can call 0800 116 117 for non-life-threatening medical issues, directing many patients away from 144 and toward general practitioners, walk-in clinics, pharmacies, or even mobile nursing teams.
Health officials say more than half of ER visits could be handled elsewhere, a trend driven by doctor shortages and rising costs. The new call center, staffed by trained professionals, will examine cases using national guidelines.
The hope it will lead to better, faster and more suitable treatment and leaving emergency rooms for genuine emergencies.
