Social media is about to get a lot less lawless in Switzerland.
The Federal Council has unveiled a new bill to tighten the rules for platforms like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and X.
Big tech firms will have to make it easier for users to report illegal content such as hate speech or harassment - and explain when they take action against accounts.
They’ll also need to be more transparent about how posts are ranked, offer customer service in Swiss national languages, and appoint a local representative.
To top it off, the platforms will pay a new monitoring tax to fund enforcement.
