Attempts to try to extort money from people suggesting hackers have incriminating evidence against internet users is soaring in Switzerland.
Figures from the National Cyber Security Center shows there were twice as many cases reported in the first half of this year than the same period in 2020 – especially so called ‘sextortion’.
That’s when potential blackmailers say they have either nude photographs or video evidence of pornography use and will release it if money isn’t paid.
In virtually all cases, it’s a complete scam.
The number of ‘phishing’ attempts are also up. That’s when fake websites try to get users to enter personal information, such as passwords.
In the first six months of this year, the Cybercrime office says over 10,000 cases were reported to them.
