A political storm is brewing in Haute-Savoie after Paris gave the green light to tolls on the A40 autoroute between Saint-Julien-en-Genevois and Annemasse, starting in 2029.
Local mayors and regional representatives say the decision is a “provocation” and a “snub” to border communities.
For them, Paris is out of touch with the realities of daily life in this border region, where many already struggle with high commuting costs.
Officials warn the tolls will push drivers onto secondary roads, creating chaos and pollution.
