Parliament is discussing ways to encourage older workers to stay in employment – but the ideas on how to do that is creating a rift between legislators and the Federal Council.
All agree on the need to keep people working for longer, due to the strain on the pension system and a simple lack of workers.
One idea is older workers should pay a lower tax rate. The government is against this as it says that’s unconstitutional – all income should be taxed according to the law.
Others also point out it will be unfair as higher earners will benefit more.
The government says it will be better to boost pension payments to those who work for longer.
The upper house of parliament, the Council of States, will be discussing the issue tomorrow.
