Perch numbers explode

The amount of perch being caught in Lake Geneva has exploded.

Figures just published show that last year 673 tonnes of the fish were caught – up over 30% from the year before.  

It’s the highest number since 2009.

Experts say the fish are producing well due to a high amount of phosphorus in the water and warm springs. 

But the numbers of signal crayfish – which is an invasive species from North America - are falling due to another invader- the quagga mussel. The shell fish attaches itself to the crayfish, which kills it.
