Car licence plates in Geneva will be produced by prisoners from November.
Currently the plates are produced by a company in the Jura – but the Cantonal Vehicle Office recently put out a call for tenders, which has been won by the La Brenaz prison in Puplinge.
The jail is fairly small, with less than 200 all male inmates and only handles those on short term sentences.
Prisoners in Switzerland have a legal right to work.
Geneva won’t be the first canton to use prisoners to make licence plates. Ticino has been using them for the last 10 years and Vaud started to earlier this year.
