Record breaking snow over the weekend

The country was hit by a snow bomb over the weekend. In many areas, a record amount fell for this time of year.

48 cm fell in 24 hours in some parts of canton Glarus – 26 cm fell around Zurich Zoo.

In addition to the snow, unusually cold December temperatures were also recorded. More than minus 20 in some parts of Graubünden.

Some roads and trainlines were blocked – often due to fallen trees.

MétéoSuisse says the reason for the snow was due to a mixture of moist air from the Mediterranean mixing with a polar front.
