Controversy is surrounding the Russian singer Anna Netrebko’s five performances at the Zurich Opera House, which started yesterday.
Ukraine’s ambassador and other critics have called for cancellations, citing the Russian soprano’s past closeness to Vladimir Putin.
Netrebko, however, hasn’t performed in Russia since 2022, and the Zurich Opera and Canton authorities insist artistic freedom must be respected.
While previous concerts in Lucerne, Munich, and New York were cancelled amid protests, Zurich is standing by its programming, keeping the world-renowned soprano on stage.
