The country was hit by strong winds, intense lightning and heavy rain last night.

In canton Zurich alone, there were more than 100 reports, including a sinking of a boat on the lake which had been struck by lightning. Fire fighters set up a boom to prevent the leaked fuel from spreading.

Trees were downed and roads blocked. 

In canton Thurgau, there are 80 reports of damages. The Romanshorn train line was blocked after part of a roof ended up on the tracks.

Weather services say there were more than 70,000 lightning flashes. Winds on the Uetliberg in Zurich measured 144 kph at time. Many other weather stations regularly reported gusts over 100.
