The UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls has singled out Switzerland for its stance on prostitution and called it a ‘pimp state.’
Reem Alsalem will present her report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
She says prostitution leads to many different types of violence against women and girls.
She says that approaches by countries like Switzerland that legalize the practice mean sex workers are taxed, so the state profits from their activities. That creates a ‘pimp state’, she argues.
She says prostitution and pornography should be recognised as a system of exploitation and countries should create the legal framework for abolition.
