Switzerland will soon be destroying U.S. military munitions.
A new deal between armasuisse, the company RUAG and the U.S. Army allows surplus ammunition to be dismantled at the Altdorf site in canton Uri.
Switzerland now uses far less ammunition, thanks to fewer soldiers, simulators, and environmental rules - but large stockpiles still need clearing. To keep the facility viable, RUAG is opening up to foreign clients.
The U.S. Army chose Switzerland over Italy for shorter transport routes and lower risks.
Authorities stress the deal fully respects Swiss neutrality.
