US president Donald Trump unveiled a series of tariffs against countries around the world. He says the United States has been ‘looted, robbed and raped’ by friends and foes alike.
He says the US will impose a levy on imports half the rate they charge the US.
This is where the confusion starts. Switzerland will be hit by a rate of 31% - because Trump says this country charges a 61% rate against the US.
But economists point out – it doesn’t.
Switzerland has abolished tariffs on goods. It’s true that this country has a trade surolus with the US on goods – but this country imports far more services.
Federal President, Karin Keller-Sutter, says the government will quickly determine it’s response and adds this country’s long term economic interests are paramount.
