Geneva is examining the issue of demonstrations and the impact they’re having on local businesses.
On average the city is blocked every other Saturday, which is angering local traders, according to Carole-Anne Kast – a minister in the cantonal government who’s in charge of authorising demonstrations.
She says in the past there were requests for a demonstration every month or two, but now they’re far more frequent.
She points out local business associations have contacted the canton asking for action. They claim when there’s a demonstration in the city, turnover can fall as much as 40%.
The Liberal Party has submitted a proposal that would prohibit marches running along tramways and across the Mont-Blanc Bridge.
