It’s now October, and from yesterday there’s been a few changes to traffic laws.
Parliament passed the new road traffic act in April – and now many of the changes have taken effect.
Serious speeders could find them selves being punished less harshly. There had been criticism from certain quarters that the strict Via Sicura laws gave judges limited room for manoeuvre when handing down sentences.
Now prison sentences and bans could be shorter than the one year previously demanded. Judges will be able to make the determination on the driver’s previous record or the reason for the speed.
New drivers still on probation may not get their probation extended for minor traffic offences.
And a company may be fined for offences if one of their vehicles is involved. Previously, if a driver could not be identified – then no one was fined.
Now the company will have to pay.
