Train travel is up from last year as people believe the worst of the pandemic is behind us – although it’s still down 40% on the same time in 2019.
Direct comparisons with last year are difficult as we were in a lockdown. But the number of people taking the train is up 65% from a year ago.
Although people are slowly going back on the tracks – freight is booming.
It’s sharply up on last year – but crucially up more than 6% from 2019 before the pandemic and close to its all-time levels hit in 2016.
It’s possible part of the reason is online shopping as more people stayed in the country instead of travelling abroad.
