Valais cantonal police blocked over approximately 150 travellers and over 40 caravans from France on the A9 motorway between Vevey and Martigny yesterday, diverting traffic onto local cantonal roads.
The police attempted to direct the convoy off the highway, but were unsuccessful. They then took the decision to block the A9. ‘Plan Cobra’ immobilised around 200 officers to block the travelers on the autoroute itself.
The travelers insisted they had an agreement with the campsite in Gampel, however the municipal authorities refused their entry.
After discussions with the police, the travelers agreed to leave the area and return to the canton of Neuchâtel, where they had been beforehand.
