The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has addressed the Swiss parliament by videoconference and thanked the country for its solidarity as the war in Ukraine continues.
He asked Switzerland to organize a world summit for peace saying that this was the country’s area of ‘expertise’.
In his address yesterday afternoon, Zelensky thanked Switzerland for adopting European Union sanctions against Russia, adding that he is grateful for any sanctions package, any frozen wealth or any measure that can reduce Russia's "terrorist potential".
He also called for Swiss-manufactured weapons to be sent to Ukraine, hoping to reverse Switzerland’s earlier decision to block Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Spain re-exporting Swiss-made ammunitions and weapons to support Ukraine in the fight against Russia.
The Swiss People’s Party boycotted the Ukraine president’s speech after failing to have the videoconference canceled, saying that it was contrary to Swiss neutrality.
