UNHCR will have a 'difficult 2026'

The Geneva-based UN Refugee Agency says it needs at least USD 300m by the end of the year to avoid a budget deficit.

UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi told member states yesterday that nearly 5,000 staff have already lost their jobs this year, with more cuts likely.

Funding reductions from major donors, including the United States, have forced the closure or downsizing of 185 offices worldwide.

The agency had requested over USD 10bn for 2024 but expects to receive only USD 3.9bn, which is the worst shortfall in a decade.

Grandi called the crisis the result of “political choices,” warning of a very difficult start to 2026 without urgent support.
