Canton Vaud is now also demanding school children wear masks.
The canton says their rates are running at about 300 a day and contact tracing is becoming more difficult.
But Vaud has a higher-than-average vaccination rate – at 85% - and the health minister Rebecca Ruiz says the health system is not under the same pressure it was last year.
But the canton says school children will have to wear masks again, which includes sport and music lessons. The rules will stay in place until the Christmas holidays at least.
There will also be an increase on checks that only the vaccinated are in public spaces, such as restaurants.
On average, 3% checked are found not to have a vaccination certificate.
