The election results are in, and as the polls predicted – the two main green parties are the heavy losers and the right-wing Swiss People’s Party is celebrating.
Voters were choosing 200 seats in the House of Representatives and 44 seats in the Senate.
The Swiss People’s Party’s share of the vote grew over 3% from four years ago, the Green Party was down 4%.
The results for the House of Representatives show the Swiss People’s Party wins 9 new seats to make a total of 62, the Greens lose 5 to stand at 23.
The other environmental party, the Green Liberals, lost 6 to leave 10.
There are still some seats to be decided, in a few cantons the candidate failed to win an absolute majority so a run off next month will be needed.
Geneva voters also mirrored the right-wing surge. The anti-frontalier Geneva Citizens Movement has won two seats, when it didn’t have any in Bern before, and could yet pick up a third as Mauro Poggia – the former Geneva Health Minister – is in a run off with the Green Party and the Socialists.
He was slightly ahead in the first round.
