Animal rights activists are continuing to target Migros for its plan to open a new poultry processing centre in canton Fribourg.
It was only last week, protestors chained themselves to equipment inside the existing building before being ejected by police.
The planned new facility would handle the same number of chickens, but will use less water and electricity – due to solar panels.
While chicken is becoming more popular in Switzerland – pork remains the most commonly consumed meat, at 20 kilos a person a year, but that’s down 5 kilos on the last few years. Chicken is filling the gap.
But we are eating too much meat – that’s not from the protestors – but the Federal Office for Food Safety. A spokesman says the population eats three times more than recommended.
