It’s been one of the wettest springs in years – and after the frosts in April, again famers are not happy.
This month has been the coldest for 50 years, 3 degrees below the average – and far more rain than normal. And it’s not stopping just yet.
Blame the Jetstream. At this time of year, the fast winds should be moving north, but they’re stuck over Switzerland, and that’s not normal according to forecasters.
It’s good news for northern Europe – Finland is basking in temperatures in the mid-twenties.
The wet weather is frustrating for restaurants as they should be able to serve customers outside at the moment- but many are staying away.
It’s also bad news for farmers. Normally at this point, there should be Swiss strawberries, asparagus, broccoli and fennel in the shops. But it’s all still in the ground and not ripening due to the weather.
But there are hopes the crops aren’t lost – when it does warm, it should be possible to harvest, according to farmers.
But what does this mean for the summer? An old farmer’s proverb suggests a mixed spring will mean a mixed summer.
