Wolves to be shot and killed preventatively

Wolves will soon be able to be shot and killed preventatively to avoid damage.

The measure was introduced by the Government yesterday as part of the implementation of the revised hunting law. It will take effect from 1 December.

Since 2020 the wolf population in Switzerland has tripled to around 300.

The aim of the new regulation is to make the animals more fearful again and to reduce the number of wolves on Swiss territory.

Last year they killed around 1500 farm animals. Most of them sheep.

Despite the new regulation, the wolf remains a protected species and shootings have to be authorized on a case by case basis.
