It’s been confirmed work will start on renovating the Mont-Blanc Bridge during the summer, which will inevitably lead to traffic problems.
Engineers say the bridge is in good shape – but it needs to be re-waterproofed to protect the metal structure and the pillars. The last time it was done was in 1970.
The bike lane will also be improved.
The bridge was rebuilt in its modern form in 1903 on the foundations of a previous crossing constructed in 1862.
To keep disruption to a minimum, late evening work and some overnight work will be allowed.
It carries 58,000 vehicles a day and the work will mean some lane closures, which may alternate depending on time of day to accommodate rush hour.
City planners rejected the idea of a complete closure as it was thought that would be too disruptive, although the work could have been done faster.
The work will start in June and last until September.
