Geneva hotels are already counting the cost of the Omicron variant and are asking for aid to save the sector.
The new strain has led to the cancellation of the World Trade Organisation ministerial conference, which was due to be held this week. It was expected 4,000 people would have arrived in the city for the event.
The head of the Geneva Hoteliers Association, Gilles Rangon, says that alone is a loss of 80% of overnight stays for this week.
In addition, the World Meteorological Organization was due to have an event next week – that’s also been cancelled.
Rangon points out the previous aid ran out last summer – and hotels won’t be able to survive if restrictions stay in place.
