An initiative to run an experiment to see if the idea of a universal basic income would work has collected enough signatures in Zurich to go to a vote.
The idea that everyone would be entitled to a monthly payment has been gaining ground across the world for the last few years – but it was roundly rejected in a vote here in 2016.
Campaigners say they want to examine the result of 500 people getting a payment for three years. The amount of payment has not been set, but it has to be above the minimum subsistence level.
The results would be examined by university researchers – but the cost will be met by the city.
