Over 100 animals have died near Bern after a fire broke out in an animal shelter yesterday afternoon.

The shelter, near Hettiswil, looked after mainly birds and rabbits.

The fire spread to a nearby apartment building, but the residents were able to escape.

It took firefighters from several nearby municipalities to bring the blaze under control.

Many families are now homeless, local authorities have already found them alternative accommodation.
