Around two thousand anti-abortion protesters marched through Zurich-Oerlikon on Saturday, carrying crosses, singing hymns, and even pushing an oversized stroller.
But the “March for Life” was anything but quiet.
Dozens of counter-demonstrators tried to block the rally, setting off firecrackers and pushing containers into the road.
Zurich police in full force intervened with water cannons and tear gas to keep the groups apart and reopen the streets.
Passersby also booed the marchers. Authorities had cordoned off Oerlikon’s market square from the start, citing past riots in the area.
