Teachers should avoid religious symbols

The country’s largest teachers’ body is weighing in on a sensitive issue - religious symbols in schools.

The Swiss Teachers’ Association is recommending that teachers avoid wearing visible religious symbols, such as headscarves, in the classroom.

President Dagmar Rösler says this is about maintaining political and religious neutrality in public schools.

The guidance is not binding, and rules remain up to the cantons.

The association also stresses that pupils remain free to wear religious symbols, citing freedom of belief which is protected by the constitution.
