The Geneva Council of State has rejected an initiative by the Geneva Citizens Movement designed to restrict the jobs that can be taken by border workers in the canton.
The Council says it violates the free movement agreement with the EU.
The initiative put forward by the anti-frontalier party says only residents in Switzerland can work for the state – such as in the tax office, human resources or holding any senior position.
The Council of State says the initiative is invalid and won’t be putting it forward to the Grand Council.
The Geneva Citizens Movement says it will appeal.
