Sunny skies and temperatures approaching 30 degrees are expected this weekend, making lakes and rivers popular destinations across. But authorities canton Vaud are warning swimmers about a very real risk: cyanobacteria, which can spread rapidly in warm, still water.
These microorganisms can cause skin irritation, flu-like symptoms, and digestive issues in humans, with young children particularly vulnerable.
Officials say water that looks cloudy, discoloured, or has surface scum should be avoided completely.
Authorities are also urging caution for pet owners, after past incidents where dogs became seriously ill or died following exposure.
If water appears suspicious, swimmers are strongly advised not to make any contact.
