ChatGPT started displaying adverts to users in Switzerland yesterday, part of the biggest geographical rollout of paid promotions on the platform to date
OpenAI is switching on the format in more than 30 European countries, six months after first testing it in the United States.
The company says the ads will be clearly labelled, kept separate from ChatGPT's answers, and will not use users' conversations to target them.
Only the free and Go tiers will see the promotions; paid subscribers will remain ad-free.
The move brings OpenAI's business model closer to Google and Meta as the firm looks for ways to fund the vast infrastructure behind its AI, having crossed one billion active users in July.
