Zurich vote imminent

Zurich will vote next month on whether Exit and Dignitas should be allowed to operate inside hospitals and rehabilitation clinics

The 27 September ballot pits patients' right to self-determination against the freedom of conscience claimed by some private care institutions.

A law passed three years ago already requires publicly-run retirement homes to permit assisted suicide but leaves private homes free to refuse.

Switzerland's most populous canton is now being asked whether that access should extend much further.
