New exhibition in Zurich

A small exhibition opening this week at UBS headquarters in Zurich is celebrating 60 years since the first cash-machine withdrawal in Switzerland

The historic transaction took place on 1 November 1967 at the Bahnhofstrasse 45 when a young apprentice at the Société de Banque Suisse, the predecessor to UBS, withdrew CHF 200.-. The bank's historian says only her age is known — around 16 or 17 — but her identity remains a mystery. The exhibition traces how banking technology has evolved from punch cards through the first cash machines to today's artificial intelligence tools.
