Beavers eat their way through ancient dwellings

Two cantons and the federal government have swung into action to protect an important archeological site from damage by over eager beavers.

Lake Inkwil straddles the cantonal line between Bern and Solothurn and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the remains of an ancient human settlement. 

The beavers are eating their way through ancient pile dwellings which are as old at 5,000 years.

The cantons and the federal government are puttimng a cage around the site to keep the beavers out. It will be sunk up to 10 meters into the lake bed.

The beavers will be rehoused on a small island in the middle of the lake.
