The government has decided to walk away from the Framework Agreement with the European Union. In a press release, it says there are too many differences.
The move means the last 7 years has been for nothing.
The government says there are three main sticking points which seem impossible to bridge – salary protection, state aid, and social security payments to EU citizens.
The aim of the Framework Agreement was to bring together around 120 separate treaties Switzerland has with the EU.
The government says it will look to work with Brussels in the future on how to develop the existing agreements.
In the meantime, Bern will release its portion of the EU cohesion funds which it had been withholding.
