Cantons, cities and municipalities are uniting against the Swiss People’s Party’s “No 10 Million Switzerland” initiative ahead of next month’s vote.
At a joint press conference yesterday, representatives warned the proposal would create new problems rather than solve existing pressures linked to immigration and population growth.
They argued that restricting immigration would worsen labour shortages in key sectors including healthcare, tourism and education, while also weakening support for the pension system.
The broad alliance says local authorities already have tools to manage growth and stressed that all Swiss cantons, cities and municipalities officially oppose the initiative.
