The Green Party in Bern is putting forward a motion to bring the speed limit on autoroutes down to 100 kph.
The environmental party says a lower speed limit would smooth traffic flow – and wouldn’t significantly lengthen journey times.
The Green Party parliamentarian, Raphael Mahaim, says he calculated the time to drive from Lausanne to Geneva would be just 6 minutes longer at 100 and not 120.
But many are opposed. The motoring organisation, the TCS, says if the limit was lowered, it would remove the befits of using the autoroute and put more cars on secondary roads.
Many others have suggestion on how to manage traffic since the people’s rejection of widening the autoroutes, including the use of more dynamic speed limits and flexible lane use which involves adjusting how may lanes run in and out of cities depending on the time of day.
