Call to stop tempting candy at checkouts

Candy at shop checkouts is too tempting for children and is contributing to childhood obesity in Geneva.

That’s the view of the Geneva Citizens Movement which has proposed a motion in the Grand Council to ban sweets at checkouts. 

Backers say shops place the items specifically designed to attract children.

But not all parties agree. Both the Liberals and the Swiss People’s Party question the move. The Liberals say there are more issues to discuss surrounding overweight kids and the SVP say it disrupts business and also calls for a stronger sports policy in schools.
