All cats should be microchipped. That’s the aim of a new campaign which will be launched next month.
Only about a third of cats are chipped, say campaigners. And 100,000 go missing every year.
There are 2 million cats in the country.
It should be compulsory, says the association SOS cats which runs shelters across the country. It points out if an unchipped animal arrives, it must keep it for at least 2 months – which adds to the costs.
The chip will also contain other useful information in addition to the owner’s details. Such as the age, medical condition, whether it’s been sterilized and the name of its vet.
