Water tensions rise with Italy

Tensions are rising between Switzerland and Italy over water, as Lake Maggiore in Ticino approaches a historic low.

With little rain and continuing drought, Ticino is allowing less water to flow into Italy, despite calls from authorities in Piedmont for more to irrigate crops in the Po Valley.

The canton says its own water supplies are under pressure, while Bern is working on an agreement with Rome to manage shortages and prevent future conflicts.
