A campaign to make sure that Switzerland doesn’t end up in the EU by the back door has collected over 140,000 signatures.
Backers say they’re concerned a package of new agreements with the EU could lead to a broad acceptance of EU laws in many sectors – bypassing direct democracy.
It wants a separate vote on the different agreements.
The initiative calls for a mandatory referendum on any issue – which will mean it will need the majority of the people and the majority of the cantons to pass, although the Federal Council says it will only need a simple vote, needing just most of the people.
